Method
- Bring the 2 cups486 g soy milk to a bare simmer — keep the heat low, since milk catches on the pot. Stir in the 1¼ cups100 g rolled oats and 2 tsp4.8 g cinnamon.
- Cook 8–10 minutes, stirring across the bottom of the pot, until creamy.
- Stir the 1 cup148 g frozen blueberries and 1 cup232 g frozen strawberries in for the last 2–3 minutes. Two cups of frozen fruit will knock the pot well off its simmer; keep it over low heat and stir until the berries are thawed and the pot is warm through — that’s done.
- Off the heat, stir in the 1 tbsp16 g peanut butter until it melts, then the 2 tbsp14 g ground flaxseed and 1 tbsp12 g chia seeds — add a splash more milk if it tightens up, and eat it while it’s still loose, since the seeds keep setting.
- Top each bowl with the ⅛ cup10 g walnuts, chopped, ⅛ cup14 g pecans, chopped, and 1 tbsp8.1 g pepitas, and season with salt, to taste.
Kids: stir the berries all the way in at the start so the whole bowl turns purple and sweet, and skip the pepitas on top if they’d rather not have the crunch.
The name: this and its savory half are the two recipes that started Minimum Viable Pantry — my own formula, seven years in, rebuilt to run on the pantry alone.

FoundThis bowl exists to get close to complete nutrition, and it lost a chunk of protein when the original formula's supplement powders were dropped for being non-foods. It was still simmering in water, because the pantry had no milk.
ChangedThe 2 cups of water becomes unsweetened soy milk, which adds around 18 g of protein without adding any sugar — the closest thing the pantry has to what the powders were doing. Milk catches where water doesn't, so the simmer is called bare and the stirring cue moved to the bottom of the pot.

HeardTwo cups of frozen berries dropped the pot straight out of its simmer, and waiting for it to climb back up stretched the cook well past the 15 minutes on the card.
ChangedRewrote the berry step to say what actually happens — the pot falls off the simmer, and thawed berries in a warm pot is the finish line. The berries only need warming through.
