In the kitchen

Raisins are the sweet note that keeps in the cupboard. Their obvious home is breakfast and baking, stirred into oatmeal, muffins, cookies, and quick breads, but their better trick is savory. A handful brings a chewy, sweet counterpoint to a Moroccan-spiced stew, a curried rice, or a pan of greens, playing against cumin, cinnamon, and salt the way acid plays against fat.

If they’ve dried firm, a short soak in hot water plumps them back. Fold them in toward the end of a dish so they stay whole and juicy rather than dissolving.

Health

Raisins are whole dried grapes, so the sweetness comes with the fruit’s fiber and a good dose of potassium and iron. As with any dried fruit, the sugar is concentrated and they’re easy to overeat by the handful, so they’re a fruit that counts as a fruit rather than a free snack; a small scattering does the work.

Raisins count as fruit under every framework here: EAT-Lancet, the Mediterranean pattern, DASH, and the Daily Dozen all count fruit, dried fruit among it. The datasets are linked from the frameworks and research below.

Common questions

How do I plump up dried-out raisins?

Soak them in hot water (or tea, or a splash of juice) for ten to fifteen minutes, then drain. They swell back to soft and juicy, which is worth doing before folding them into a batter or a grain dish so they don't pull moisture from around them as they cook.

Raisins in savory food, really?

Yes, and it's a classic move. A handful of raisins brings a sweet counterpoint to salty, spiced dishes: a Moroccan tagine, a curried rice or couscous, a sautéed pot of greens with pine nuts. Their sweetness plays against cumin, cinnamon, and chili the way a squeeze of acid plays against fat.

Golden or regular raisins, does it matter?

Not much. Golden raisins are dried differently, so they stay softer and taste a little brighter and more tart; regular raisins are darker and deeper. They swap freely, so use whichever you have, or whichever suits the dish's color.

What can I make with raisins?

You'll find raisins in 2 recipes here, and the ones that use the most are Maple Nut Granola and Peanut-Date Energy Bites.

How long can you store raisins?

About 6 months in the pantry — unopened; reseal tightly or refrigerate after opening.

Is there gluten in raisins?

No — raisins are gluten-free.

How much does a serving of raisins cost?

About $0.19 a serving at US retail (Jul 2026), from Walmart — Great Value California sun-dried raisins, 20 oz canister.
